Sanju Samson Player Profile – A Classy Match-Winner from Kerala
Sanju Samson is among the few Indian cricketers who carved out a strong identity in franchise cricket before becoming a regular talking point in international discussions. Best known for his long association with the Rajasthan Royals, Samson has grown into one of the most dependable and influential players in the IPL era.

Early Journey and Cricket Foundation
Sanju Samson was born on 11 November 1994 and was first introduced to cricket in Delhi, where his father was employed in the police department. During his teenage years, he relocated to Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, a move that helped shape his cricketing future. Competing in age-group tournaments in Kerala, Samson quickly gained attention for his fluent stroke play, sound technique, and ability to find gaps with ease.
Although he represented India in the Under-19 Asia Cup in 2011, he failed to make a lasting impression and narrowly missed out on selection for the Under-19 World Cup squad the following year. Rather than slowing him down, the setback strengthened his resolve to succeed at the domestic level.
Domestic Cricket and Leadership
Samson made his first-class debut during the 2011–12 season and soon became a vital player for Kerala in the Ranji Trophy. His standout performance came in the 2013–14 season, where he amassed over 500 runs at an exceptional average, including a double century in his very first match of the season. He continued his consistency in the next campaign as well.
In recognition of his maturity and cricketing intelligence, Samson was appointed Kerala’s captain at just 20 years of age. One of the most memorable moments of his domestic career arrived in 2019, when he smashed an unbeaten 212 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, setting a record for the highest individual score in the competition at that time.
Rise Through the IPL
Rajasthan Royals secured Sanju Samson’s services in the 2013 IPL auction, when he was only 18 years old. From the very beginning, he showcased fearlessness against top-quality bowling attacks. Except for the two seasons when Rajasthan Royals were suspended, Samson has remained a core member of the franchise. During that gap, he played for Delhi Daredevils, gaining valuable experience.
He was handed the captaincy of Rajasthan Royals in 2021, a season highlighted by a spectacular 119-run knock in the opening match. Despite mixed team results in earlier years, Samson’s leadership bore fruit in IPL 2022, as he guided the Royals to the final, where they finished runners-up. His consistent run-scoring in the middle and top order has made him one of the most reliable batters in the tournament.
International Career So Far
Sanju Samson earned his India T20I debut in 2015 against Zimbabwe. However, his journey with the national side has been marked by irregular opportunities. He later made his ODI debut in 2021 and delivered a steady half-century during a tour of the West Indies, showing his ability to perform at the highest level when given a chance.
